Luke Frels
Mr. Frels is in his third year as choral activities director at Fairfax High School. Prior to coming to FHS, Mr. Frels taught at the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology in Alexandria and at Ryan High School in Denton, Texas. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Mr. Frels is an active singer, clinician, adjudicator, and occasionally composes.
Mr. Frels received his Bachelor in Music Education Degree from Oklahoma State University in 1998. While at OSU he sang with the Concert Chorale, Chamber Singers, and Opera Studio. He studied choral conducting with Dr. Jerry McCoy. Mr. Frels was an honors student and received many awards including the Outstanding Freshman Music Major Award and the St. Cecilia Scholarship. As a senior he served as assistant conductor and took on a special project to lead a performance of Haydn's Seven Last Words.
He received his Master of Arts degree in Voice from San Jose State University in 2000. At San Jose State, Mr. Frels was an assistant conductor in the choral program in addition to his voice studies. He traveled with the chorus to Europe in 1999 for a tour that culminated in a performance at the International Federation of Choral Music in Rotterdam. Mr. Frels sang with Opera San Jose during this time as well.
Professionally, Mr. Frels has been active for the past 12 years. He has sung and recorded with such notable groups as The Santa Fe Desert Chorale, The Robert Shaw Festival Singers, Conspirare, the Orpheus Chamber Singers of Dallas, the Washington Bach Consort, the Bach Sinfonia, the Cathedral Choral Society, and Operal Lafayette. He currently sings with the all-professional choir of Christ Church in Georgetown.
Mr. Frels lives in Springfield with his wife Hilary, his two children Eric & Jill, his two cats Nip & Tuck, and his dog Eco.![]()
